UNIMAX™ is a pedicle screw and plate system with unique capabilities unmatched by similar implants in the market. Over the last 5 years over 1,000 patients have been implanted with the UNIMAX system and it has been with excellent results. It is worth mentioning here that during the early stages of development of UNIMAX many patients volunteered for the implantation of the new pedicle screw system, showing complete trust in the system.

UNIMAX™ Pedicle Screw and Plate system is a rectangular construct that closely follows the biomechanical principles of normal spine.

1. Physical Features:

  • Horizontal plates (cross links) at every vertebral level.
  • Rectangular construct.
  • Multiple fixation points for maximum load sharing.
  • Ball-socket joint between bone screw heads and horizontal plates to accommodate varying pedicle angles.

2. Easy Maneuverability:

  • Horizontal plates of varying lengths to accommodate varying inter-pedicle distances.
  • Special washers to accommodate varying pedicle angles.

3. High pullout resistance:

  • Multiple fixation points, for maximum load sharing and creating negligible chances of lone screw displacement.
  • Instrumentation encloses a pyramid shaped bone which increases the pull-out resistance tremendously.
  • Ideal instrumentation system for older patients and patients with osteoporosis.

4. Ease of instrumentation:

  • Large end-holes in horizontal plates for easy implantation.
  • Top-loading system
  • Vertical fixation between vertical plates and horizontal plates through square bolts. Varying angles of pedicle screws do not affect ease of instrumentation like in other systems.
  • Vertical alignment made easy by adjustable square bolts that can slide laterally along the horizontal plates.

5. Easy and definite correction of spinal deformities:

  • Special extended square bolts are used to align by slowly threading up the spondylolisthetic vertebra to correct Spondylolisthesis.
  • UNIMAX has cross links at every vertebral level and when the cross links are firmly secured to the pedicle screws and to the vertical plates (multiple fixations), rotational deformities are automatically corrected.
  • Scoliosis correction can be done by sequentially distracting and compressing one side as compared to the other side.

6. Additional room for poster lateral fusion (PLF):

  • The vertical fixation is achieved by securing the horizontal plates to the vertical plates at a more medial level than in the other systems, where the vertical fixation is achieved by connecting the pedicle screws. Besides having a surgical advantage of not having to encounter difficulties in securing the pedicle screws with varying angles at a lateral level, UNIMAX system also provides the more room to put bone graft for poster lateral fusion.
